Correspondent, Breaking News Hub, Seoul Bureau
We have an exciting opportunity for a correspondent role in Seoul on the breaking news hub, the team that jumps on big news and high-interest stories from around the world, acting as an early warning system and force multiplier for all the subject area desks in the newsroom.
Day to day responsibilities will include reporting on the biggest breaking news stories like the collapse of the Baltimore bridge, the war in Gaza and India’s election, while writing engaging features that draw large readership. The correspondent’s work often leads the homepage of the Times, and requires someone who can work across formats and genres and build relationships across departments and time zones.
This is a general assignment position, which will suit someone who is a quick study and versatile, able to cover a wide variety of topics and stories anywhere in the world. Ideal candidates have an established track record of reporting on news, developing sources and writing clearly and with style. A sense of humor and an appreciation for offbeat, quirky ideas that appeal to online audiences is also a must. The correspondent should be a team player who is interested in driving the evolution of news coverage in the digital age, imagining new ways to tell stories and solving problems collaboratively. It is critical that the correspondent can skillfully work with reporters across a range of formats and should have strong editorial news judgment and extensive experience reporting on a variety of stories.
The correspondent will report to the deputy who heads up the Asia hub, a joint operation of the Live and Express breaking news teams. Please note that this role will require some weekend and occasional night shifts as news demands.
Main responsibilities:
Reporting on big breaking news and working with a variety of other desks during overnight hours in the U.S.
Generating new ideas for live coverage and informing best practices in a changing news landscape.
Working across the newsroom on stories that cross desks and formats.
Forming strong partnerships with journalists across the newsroom and in bureaus throughout the world.
Our ideal candidate:
Basic qualifications
Strong news judgment, quick decision making and ability to pivot between stories and topics.
Extensive experience of professional daily news reporting in a comparable role.
The ability to work fast on deadline, handle evolving storylines and write about new topics quickly and with authority.
Excellent writing, grammar and style skills.
Ability to develop sources
Produce a variety of story forms, from a traditional ledeall to an insightful live update to a takeaways file that summarizes a complex event.
Deep knowledge of issues in International and U.S. news coverage, among other topics.
Ability to work collaboratively with senior newsroom leaders and new hires alike.
A team player who is interested in driving the evolution of news coverage in the digital age, imagining new ways to tell stories and solving problems collaboratively.
Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.
Preferred qualifications:
A passion for storytelling and infusing that skill into live news.
Demonstrated creativity in identifying and developing news features with a strong appeal to digital readers, particularly in the international audience A desire to learn new tools and journalism forms — and an interest in shaping them for the future.
An outlook that is reader-focused and seeks to serve the needs and interests of curious digital audiences.
An appreciation for quirky, offbeat stories that challenge traditional news judgments.
A self-starter with excellent technical proficiency and communication skills who can be productive and proactive in working with supervising editors and colleagues in both the U.S., Europe and Asia.
Fluency in other languages would be a plus.
